Upstream
Overview
The upstream oil and gas sector operates in a volatile energy market and is under constant pressure to operate safely, efficiently and in an environmentally friendly way. Each decade brings new challenges that require adaptability to achieve strategic aims.
There are several critical success factors for companies operating in this capital-intensive sector. First and foremost, they must comply with strict legal regulations relating to HSE (health, safety and the environment) – not just in practice but also in spirit. Secondly, as no single company can control price, production volumes need to be kept as high as possible in order to preserve margin – and ultimately commercial viability. Finally, given the significant investment required for exploring, developing and producing oil and gas, cost efficiencies are a priority, but they should not increase risk to HSE, production or long-term technical integrity.
One of the most pressing challenges for upstream operations is to ensure safe and efficient operations. This can be achieved by prioritizing employee safety, implementing best practices across the operation, and deploying management systems that identify and proactively address risk to HSE performance.
In order to maintain production volumes and maintain the economic viability of an oil and gas field, efficient maintenance processes and practices improve overall equipment effectiveness (OOE), which in turn ensures production losses are minimized.
Cost of operations is critical, especially for fields that are on plateau or in decline. However, costs should only be reduced as a result of improving efficiencies, such as increasing tool time, better work planning/scheduling, cost effective use of parts, materials and consumables, etc. Reducing cost without addressing underlying efficiencies will increase risk to HSE and production.
Growth and sustainability depend on replenishing or increasing reserves. As existing reservoirs deplete, companies need to succeed in finding and developing new sources of oil and gas. Again, efficiency is critical in ensuring development projects are executed safely, on time and within budget. Companies also need to invest in new technologies to reduce development costs for new fields and to improve recovery rates for existing fields.
Times are changing and the sector has to embark on a journey to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net zero targets. Embedding sustainability strategies into core business operations offers a better future to remain resilient to external disruptions.
